Bunds
Bulk tanks storing fuel, oils or chemicals often pose the greatest potential spillage risk on site. The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001 require sound tanks and secondary containment or bunding to contain a spill should it occur. The Regulations are specific in defining the minimum capacity of the bunds. The Environment Agency’s Pollution Prevention Guideline PPG2 recommend the reinforced concrete construction and the impermeable lining of such bunds. The bunds of many companies are not built or maintained to a standard to comply with legal requirements or best practice.
